Likud Discusses Proposal to Ban a Palestinian State

Ariel Sharon

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, May 11 (IslamOnline & News Agencies ) – While Israel has second thoughts about invading Gaza, Likud party will meet Sunday to discuss a proposal to ban a Palestinian state.

The resolution, if approved, will require Likud representatives in the government, including Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, to block any political move leading to the establishment of a Palestinian state. The resolution aims to establish a binding principle that will be permanent, news agencies reported.

In a attempt to prevent the debate and vote on the resolution, an alternative resolution, authorizing the party's chairman to draft a proposed political agreement with the Palestinians,to be presented to the Central Committee for approval, was proposed by Doron Shmueli, a member of  Sharon's camp.

This attempt failed, as the party court rejected Friday putting an alternative resolution on the agenda, saying that it had no authority to dictate the Central Committee's agenda. The court also said that before approving discussing the proposal, it is necessary to get the signatures of 20 percent of the committee's members, news agencies reported.

If the proposal is approved, the members of the Likud Central Committee will be responsible for a disastrous policy, as the demand for a Palestinian state is accepted by the entire international community, as well as by past Israeli governments.

According to news agencies, the call for such a resolution is a pressure by Sharon’s political opponents, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, in order to make it more difficult for Sharon on Sunday with a decision rejecting, in principle, a Palestinian state.

The resolution, which states that "no Palestinian state will be established west of the Jordan River," is backed not only by Netanyahu, but also by a sizable majority of the Central Committee.

Meanwhile,  Israel appears to have ruled out a major military offensive in the Gaza Strip, moving instead toward preparing a limited operation with specific targets, news agencies reported.

A modified, more limited operation with specific targets and a reduced number of ground forces will be used instead. The strategy was altered, news agencies said, because the Israeli military lost the element of surprise.
