JENIN, West Bank, May 5 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) – As if relieved by scrapping the UN mission supposed to have probed Israeli war crimes in the devastated refugee camp of Jenin, Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian mother and her two children near Jenin Sunday, bringing Israel’s latest war crimes to the limelight again.
Careless Israeli occupation troops killed Fatma Ibrahim Zakarneh, 30, her son Bassem, four, and daughter Abir, three, near an Israeli army base where an explosive device was detonated near an armored vehicle, hospital officials in Jenin told Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The unjustifiable killings occurred near the village of Zababida, southeast of Jenin.
According to Israeli military sources, the soldiers shot at "suspicious" figures that were trying to flee the area.
However, witnesses said Fatma, a vineyard worker, whose husband Mohammed was abducted in a round-up following the attempted attack on the Israeli army vehicle was feeding her children when they were shot.
They said that three-year-old Abir was found with bread still in her hand, while Fatma's 10-month-old baby survived the shooting.
"The Israeli army can only express its regret for the loss of life in the civilian population," said the Israeli military source.
Just a few hours later, however, machinegun fire from Israeli tanks killed eight-year-old Tamer Abu Sirriyeh, hit in the chest in a refugee camp near Tulkarem, southwest of Jenin.
Another teenager, aged 16, was hit in the head and seriously injured in the same incident, they said.
According to Israeli daily newspaper, Ha’aretz, the Israeli army expressed its "deep sorrow" over the incident and said it regretted the loss of civilian life.
On Friday, May 3, after a week-long investigation, Human Rights Watch (HRW) charged Israel of committing war crimes during its military operation in the Jenin refugee camp.
During the period the Israeli occupation army had control of the camp, the Israeli authorities had responsibility under international humanitarian law for the welfare of the civilian population. Yet Israeli authorities denied humanitarian organizations access to the camp during their offensive, said HRW, and continued to prevent humanitarian access to the refugee camp for days after military operations had ceased, despite great need.
However, the Jenin human tragedy seems now in its way to be forgotten history to join other war crimes committed against people. Israel, thanks to unlimited U.S. support, has again proved to be a state above the law.
