Opposing
Demonstrations in London Over Mid-East Conflict
LONDON,
May 6 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - Thousands took to the
streets of London Monday to express conflicting support for either the
Palestinians or the Israelis.
At
least 10,000 people marched in an Israel solidarity rally to London's
Trafalgar Square waving Israeli flags and banners reading
"Yes to peace, no to terror" and "Suicide bombers kill
people and peace". There also was a rival demonstration in
support of the Palestinian people on the other side of the square,
consisting of 3,000 protesters carrying a banner which read "War
on terrorism is war on Israel," news agencies reported.
A
spokesman for the Israel Solidarity Rally said the aim is really to
show solidarity with the people of Israel and to say yes to peace and
no to terror, Agence France-Presse (AFP) said.
According
to the AFP, Massoud Shadjareh, chairman of the Islamic Human Rights
Commission, said: "We simply felt the Israeli rally was
provocative and felt we needed to campaign against that. "We feel
that in the light of recent massacre in Jenin it's extremely
insensitive to organize a rally and blatantly say they support the
state of Israel. It is offensive."
Former
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Britain's Chief Rabbi
Jonathan Sacks addressed the rally, news agencies reported.
"It's
a shame the Muslim groups don't want to join in, but we are calling
for a resumption to peace talks and we aren't going to be distracted
by people looking to wind up trouble," a spokesman for the
Israeli march said, AFP reported.
On
the other hand, Kumar Murshid, chairman of the London Muslim Coalition
said "if the purpose of this rally is to support the Israeli
government and its position then it's clearly not a step in the
direction of peace but quite the contrary."
About 1,000 police officers have been mobilized for the protests, a
police spokesman told AFP.
Responding
to the wide-spread accusations that Israeli army carried out a
massacre and war crimes in the Jenin refugee camp during its
occupation in April, Israel has denied the accusations regardless to
the fact that it has blocked a fact-finding mission from investigating
the charges as well as some eye witness accounts from Europeans.
