Actions To Be Taken By National Muslim Leadership Summit (NMLS)

WASHINGTON, March 30 (IslamOnline) - Responding to the Government Raids on Muslim institutions and families, the National Muslim Leadership Summit (NMLS) held three sessions in the past week to address the government raids on Muslim institutions and families in Northern Virginia and Georgia that took place on Wednesday March 20th 2002.

The Summit held a press conference at CAIR’s headquarters in Washington DC, on Thursday March 21st to express the outrage these raids have created in our community and to call on the government to stop its witch-hunt against the Muslim community. 

Mohammed S. Omeish, Head of Success Foundation, a Muslim Organization based in US, said that the Summit had also decided to call our community for several immediate action items as follows:

1- To vigorously and actively engage itself at all levels in Da’awah as our primary duty and our first line of defense against ignorance and stereotyping.

2- A nationwide day of fasting on Thursday, April 11, to get closer to Allah, and to strengthen our solidarity as a community.

3- A nationwide day of “Night Prayers” on Friday April 12, 2002, to repent and express our trust in Allah and our resilience in face of these violations.

4- A national rally for “Muslim Civil Rights” at the Freedom Plaza, Washington DC, on April 13, 2002.

5- Coordinating Council of Muslim Organizations in Greater Washington is leading the reach out to the civic and religious communities to form local and national coalitions, to stand with our community against government abuse of power.

6- “Solidarity USA” is providing the vital legal defense and assistance to the victims of these abuses, individuals and institutions, through whenever possible.

7- The (NMLS) will hold a community town-hall meeting on Monday April 1, 2002 from 7:00 PM till 10:00 PM at Hilton, Alexandria to inform the community of the current developments and activities, and to hear the community’s suggestions and recommendations. Only International media outlets will be invited.

The agenda of this meeting will include updating the community and the International Media on “the State of Muslim Civil Rights in the United States”, sharing the suggestions and activities carried out by the members of the NMLS, soliciting suggestions from the community, and answering community questions and concerns.
