ABEOKUTA, Nigeria, March 6 (IslamOnline) - The detonation of bombs at the Ikeja military Cantonment in Lagos started Wednesday, March 6, backed by the January 27 Lagos Bomb Explosion Fund of 100 million Nairo ($1million U.S.)
Two thousand people were killed during a bomb explosion which left many children missing and displaced from their families.
Announcing the detonation of the bombs in Lagos, the commercial nerve center of Nigeria, the Minister of State for Defense (Army), Alhaji Lawal Batagarawa
disclosed that the detonation exercise was being done by British and American Bomb Experts.
He stated that 60 American soldiers from the American Explosive Ordinance Department (AEOD) were involved in the bomb detonation exercise, which according to him would take two months between 9.00 am and 1.00 p.m.
daily.
The Minister revealed that members of the Nigerian Army Ordinance Corps and the Nigerian Army Electrical, Mechanical and Engineering (NAEME) would participate in the detonation to understudy the American soldiers.
He, however, charged the residents in the area not to panic and to stay away from the danger zone during the period, noting that the Adekunle Fajuyi street of the Ikeja GRA would be closed at that time.
Present at the briefing included Chief of Policy and Plans Army, Major-General David Enahoro;the General Officer Commanding the 81 Division, Brigadier-General Abdul Tanko; the 9th Brigade Commander, Brigadier-General George Emdin and the American Deputy Defense Attaché, Col. Oliver Cass.
A mass burial for about one thousand unclaimed dead bodies from the bomb explosion was held in Lagos last week.
