Pakistan Considers Shutting "Jihadi" Offices

Additional reporting by IOL correspondent Aamir Latif in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (IslamOnline) - Pakistan's military government may close the offices of all Islamic resistance organizations inside Pakistan, restricting them to Pakistani-ruled Kashmir.

Pakistan news online reports the Musharraf government has called for stern action to be taken against any "Jihadi" (Islamic Resistance) organization involved in violence in any part of Pakistan.

Interior Minister Moinuddin Haider on Tuesday spent about four hours in a high-level meeting at General Headquarters (GHQ) in the capital, where he presented a detailed report about nationwide protests against the government.

Informed sources of the GHQ told IslamOnline that the interior minister briefed top government officials about the current situation of law and order in the country.

"The meeting was of the view that the government should take more stern action against the elements involved in anti-U.S. protests," sources said.

The participants at the meeting suggested that laws must be tightened in order to curb public protests and maintain law and order in the country.

The interior minister also presented a detailed report on leaders of political and religious parties in all four of Pakistan's provinces who are aleegedly participating in pro-Taliban and anti-government demonstrations.

"The meeting has decided that the activities of all Jihadi organizations would be limited to Kashmir. Closure of these organizations' offices inside the country also under consideration," sources revealed.

"The government is seriously considering about the closure of these Jihadi outfits' offices in Pakistan so that the propaganda waging by western and India media against Pakistan in reference of these organizations could be counter," they added.

The Pakistani government has offered intelligence, logistics and the use of airspace in support of U.S.-led air strikes against Afghanistan.

Government support for the U.S.-led military campaign has been strongly criticized by many Pakistanis, who have staged protests throughout the country.
