Hackers Call for Attacks Against Arab and Islamic Sites

By Ayub Khan

CHICAGO, Sept 14 (IslamOnline) - Even as the identity of those involved in the attacks on the World trade Center and Pentagon have yet to be fully ascertained, Internet hackers are already calling for "revenge" attacks against Muslim and Arab websites.

At incidents.org, a website run by SANS (System Administration, Networking, and Security) Institute, there is a string of postings from U.S. newsgroups calling for an attack on Arab and Islamic websites.

"I think that we should join together and attack the terrorist group that caused the death[s]," one posting read. "No one will help the terrorist when we attack them. For the love of mankind, let's join together once we are sure who attacked, and nail the group's a***s to the wall."

"We have a large, incredibly well-trained and highly motivated corps of soldiers [for] the new mode of war," said another posting.

"I am referring to the thousands of pre-adolescent youths whom we have derogatorily called 'script kiddies'.

"Let our highly trained troops of hackers use their well-honed tools to deny access to the computers that permit terrorists to operate. Let these children of the new order break into the coffers that fund the destroyers and spread the funds into the ether."

These threats set off alarm bells among the cyber community, who fear widespread disruption in Internet services as a result.

"The physical terrorism aspect is more than enough to track and deal with. The cyber component is the last thing we need to deal with," Ben Venzke wrote on the SecurityFocus' incidents list.

"It is unfortunately something I believe we will end up seeing, either in relation to the above, or in response to any possible future retaliatory actions by the U.S."

Prominent German hacking groups have also rejected the appeal for so-called "revenge attacks."

Andy Mueller-Maughn, spokesman for The Chaos Computer Club, formed in Hamburg 20 years ago, said that the Internet should be used for positive efforts in the light of the attacks in New York and Washington.

"Means of electronic communication such as the Internet can, especially today, make an important contribution to further understanding between different peoples," he said.

"Given the tense situation, we should not cut off means of communication and open up an even bigger gulf in understanding between peoples."
