Syrian Couple, Child Slain in Lebanon

BEIRUT, Sept 2 (IslamOnline & News Agencies) - A Syrian couple and one of their children were shot dead in Lebanon early Sunday, official sources said, adding that two of the couple's other children were seriously injured, news agencies reported.

Mohammad Humeidi, his wife, and one of their children were killed in Deir Zannun on the outskirts of the city of Shtaura, home to the headquarters of the Syrian army and 45 kilometers (27 miles) east of Beirut, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

"Blood was everywhere. It was brutal. The mother, father and child were killed instantly," said a medical source, the BBC's online service reported.

He said the two surviving children were shot in the head, chest and other places.

At least 30 bullets were fired at the family by a machinegun that was found nearby, security sources said, BBC added.

The two other wounded children remain in serious condition at a private hospital, while the bodies of their parents and sibling were taken to a Lebanese military morgue.

The sources said that an automatic weapon was found near the site of the killings, which took place at 4:00 am (0100 GMT).

Earlier, two Syrian workers had been found riddled with bullets in the Christian area of Beirut, news agencies reported. The killer apparently used guns fitted with silencers as their neighbors heard no shots.

It was the third incident involving Syrian victims in less than a month in Lebanon, where anti-Syrian Christian groups have been blamed for the violence. Lebanese authorities have recently arrested about 200 of their members for plotting to partition the country and collaborating with Israel.

Two Syrian workers were killed on August 19th, and two others wounded, while another two were killed two weeks before. Both incidents were attributed to the alleged accidental explosion of a hand grenade.

Twenty thousand Syrian troops have been deployed in Lebanon since Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war.
