Malaysia Signs Defense Purchase Agreements With Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Feb 10 (News Agencies) - Malaysia on Saturday signed two agreements for the purchase of defense equipment from Pakistan, the official Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) said.

The agreements came after Malaysian Defense Minister Najib Razak met with Pakistani military ruler General Pervez Musharraf and discussed bilateral matters and defense cooperation.

A statement said, "The agreements will strengthen the existing bilateral defense ties in the field of training and procurement."

It did not give details of the agreements inked by senior defense ministry officials of the two countries.

Earlier reports from Kuala Lumpur said Malaysia had agreed to buy missiles and other weapons worth 79.4 million ringgit ($20.9 million) from Pakistan.

The agreements relate to the purchases of an anti-tank weapon system and surface-to-air missiles, a Malaysian defense ministry statement carried by Bernama news agency said.

Razak, who arrived Friday, earlier visited Pakistan Ordnance Factories near Islamabad and expressed interest in small arms being produced there.

Malaysia has previously purchased weapons from Pakistan.
