Muslims Respond To Right-Wing Temple Advocates

WASHINGTON (IslamOnline) - The All India Muslim Personal Law Board's (AIMPLB) executive council met in New Delhi Sunday giving a stern warning to the government to deal firmly with the "hot-heads" of the Hindu right.

The AIMPLB said that it was willing to undertake meaningful dialogue with the government concerning the Babri Masjid issue.

At the same time, it rejected any talks with the far-right Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), as it said that there could be no dialogue possible with "those responsible for the martyrdom of the Babri mosque"

The AIMPLB's four-hour executive meeting was convened in response to the Dharma Sansad's decision to set a date for removal of all "obstacles" in the way of the Rama temple construction. It said that the VHP's decision to announce the date for temple construction has posed a challenge to both the state and the constitution.

"The atmosphere of communal amity is being vitiated by persistent and a well orchestrated hate campaign by anti-social and anti-national elements for political ends who are threatening to flagrantly violate the basic values and features of the constitution," a resolution of the executive said.

It also said that the Babri masjid site was non-negotiable and that every effort must be made to reconstruct the mosque.

The executive meeting constituted a five-member committee to monitor the situation that has risen out of "belligerent statements" by forces that were directly responsible for the demolition of the Babri Masjid.

The committee has also been given the authority to hold talks with the government if invited.

Maulana Nizamuddin, a member of the newly constituted committee, said that there has been no offer from the government yet, "but we have not slammed our doors shut on any negotiations with the government. We will treat with great respect any initiative by the government provided it is sincere."

The Board also authorized the committee to take their message to the masses to create awareness among them so that they would not be misled "by the hate campaign propagated by rabid communal forces on the Babri Masjid issue."

Meanwhile, the VHP's president, Ashok Singhal, warned Muslims not to create hurdles in the path of the Ram temple construction and said that they should better understand the power of the Sadhus and Sanths - Hindu holy men.

He said that the same mass spirit that was used to destroy the Babri Masjid, will now be used to construct the Ram temple, and said that the Muslims will be able to live peacefully only if they voluntarily withdraw their claim to the site.

He further added that no power can stop the power of the Sadhus and Sants.
