Nigerian State Demonstrates Against U.N. Conference
CAIRO (IslamOnline) - The Nigerian state of Kano witnessed strong demonstrations against a U.N.-held conference discussing teenage sex education.
The conference entitled "We're Aware Of Sexual Diseases" was to take place in mid-January and targeted teenagers between 15-18 years old.
The Council of Islamic Scholars urged Nigerian authorities to halt the conference and to freeze the activities of foreign organizations and delegations in Nigeria.
Moreover, the Council recommended a censorship committee to examine the cultural programs off foreign institutions in Nigeria.
"The sex education conference will spoil the Nigerian youth and will turn them away from the Islamic instructions," said Muzammil Mohammed, spokesman of the Islamic council.
Mohamed said that northern Nigerian states, where the Islamic Sharia' is implemented, were hosting various foreign delegations who attempted to deviate Muslim youth from following Islamic instructions.
"Now that we are implementing the Sharia', these delegations have no place among us," Mohamed added.
"Muslim scholars and Islamic institutions will struggle for a full and proper implementation of Sharia'," he asserted.
