Muslim American Organization Places Petition Online
WASHINGTON (IslamOnline) - In conjunction with several U.S. Islamic organizations, the Muslim American Society (MAS) is distributing a petition that it will deliver to the new U.S. administration of George W. Bush after January 20th.
The petition calls for the end of abuses committed by Israel in the Occupied Territories, including the killing of children, and the U.S.’s support of the Jewish state, stating that they are “outraged by the continuous unconditional U.S. support of Israeli aggression and the blocking of any United Nations’ Security Council resolutions aimed at curbing Israeli aggression.”
Specifically, the petition calls upon the United States to stop the unconditional support towards Israeli aggression and U.S. abuse of the veto right in the United Nations, to honestly reflect its long acclaimed “honest broker”/”even-handed” status, make U.S. aid to Israel contingent upon Israel’s compliance with international laws and its protection of human rights, as is U.S. policy with other countries, and that the U.S. institute a mechanism to ensure that Israel never uses U.S. made weapons to target or attack civilian populations under any circumstances.
The petition is spread throughout mosques and masjids in the United States last week for people to physically sign the document.
In addition, MAS is also providing an electronic petition whereby people worldwide can sign their names to the petition (see Related Link). The electronic petition was placed on the Internet Friday.
MAS President Soheil Gannouchi said that the stated goal of the number of petition signers was “in the millions.”
As of this writing, Gannouchi stated that the petition had only been online a few hours, so that any sort of initial reaction from web users could not be gauged.
Speaking on presenting the petition, Gannouchi said, “Hopefully we can get a delegation of representatives of the national organizations of signers to meet the administration of the new president.”
Although the electronic petition currently only appears on MAS’s web site, it is supported and backed by a host of American Islamic organizations including the American Muslim Alliance (AMA), American Muslim Council (AMC), American Muslims for Global Peace and Justice, American Muslims for Jerusalem (AMJ), Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR), Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP), Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), Ministry of Imam W D Muhammad (MAS), and the Muslim Public Affairs Committee (MPAC).
