Thousands Of Nigerian Muslims Condemn Killings Of Palestinians

GUSAU, Nigeria (AFP) - Thousands of Muslims have protested in Nigeria's city of Gusau against the killings of Palestinians by Israeli troops, a journalist said Saturday.

The peaceful rally, called by a Muslim youth organization, was followed by a street demonstration after Friday prayers in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.

The protesters, mainly youths and Islamic scholars, carried placards and chanted slogans in Arabic: "Death to Israel, [Prime Minister] Ehud Barak, the U.S., President Bill Clinton, the U.N., Britain, France and Russia."

Some of the placards read, "There is no going back on the liberation of Palestinian land," "Israelis must vacate occupied Palestinian land."

The protesters later marched to the residence of Zamfara State Governor Ahmad Sani.

Sani, whose state in January began implementing Islamic sharia’, said all Muslims should to rise up against Israeli aggression against Palestinians.

He announced a special fund to purchase arms, vehicles and equipment to assist Palestinians in their struggle and said he was donating five months' salary to the fund.

Officials of the Palestinian mission in Nigeria and the Zamfara government attended a prayer session ahead of the protest.
