Gulf Papers Call OIC Summit "Toothless Tiger"
WASHINGTON (IslamOnline) - The Organizations of Islamic Conference (OIC) was widely criticized by a number of newspapers in the Gulf and elsewhere.
The official UAE news agency WAM, commenting on the OIC 's recently concluded Doha Summit, quipped, " [the] Doha summit resolutions have lost their relevance as they are just ink on paper. OIC is a toothless tiger."
Sharjah's Khaleej daily opined, "Internal differences and petty bickering over narrow interests had turned OIC into a toothless tiger. Unfortunately, [the] Doha summit has followed the Cairo summit in failing to take at least semi-critical resolutions on the Arab conflict with the Zionist enemy."
Dubai's Gulf News charged, "Preferring rhetoric to action, the meeting has produced empty threats and hollow words. Internal differences and narrow vested interests have reduced the 56-member organization to a toothless tiger which can only come out with a whimper even when it wants to roar."
OIC resolutions concerning Kashmir were also described by other media as having little impact on the conflict.
Masood Hussain, writing for Tehelka.com, an Indian-related website, said that the OIC's resolution concerning Kashmir, in its ninth conference - like the previous eight - will have limited impact on the issue.
Noor Ahmed Baba, author of "OIC - Theory and Practice of Pan Islamic Co-operation," also speaking on Tehelka.com, said, "They are not so strongly united on Kashmir, or for that matter, on any other issue. That is why they are helpless in taking strong steps like economic sanctions or snapping the diplomatic ties with countries like Israel, even though in the recent summit the issue of Palestine was on top of the agenda and devoured much of the Summit time."
Praise for the summit was virtually non-existent.
