Taliban mounted more daring attacks against the West-backed Kabul government and the US-led foreign troops. The group, ousted by the US in 2002, was seen regaining control over large parts of Afghanistan. Its resurgence promoted Kabul and some Western allies to publicly promote the hitherto tabooed idea of engaging Taliban.
