Despite international criticism, an Israeli siege, imposed in June 2007, was further tightened in 2008, blocking the flow of food, medicine and fuel to the 1.6 million people of Gaza. The lack of basics and necessities forced Gazans to use Stone Age utilities such as wood fire ovens and candle-lightening.
