The year 2008 saw political feuding sliding into infighting and bringing headless Lebanon to the brink of a second civil war. Days of street gun battles were finally brought to a peaceful end thanks to a Qatari-led Arab initiative. The reconciliation was crowned by the election of a president and formation of a national unity government.
