Iran at the Crossroads

Tehran insists that its nuclear program, launched before the Islamic revolution, is aimed solely at generating electricity for a growing population. Iran announced in April 2006 it was enriching uranium to levels required to produce atomic energy.

The United States and its allies accuse Iran of using its nuclear program to hide a quest for atomic weapons

On Sunday, December 24, 2006 Iran remained defiant over the newly imposed "illegal" UN sanctions, vowing to press ahead with its nuclear program and warning that full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was no longer guaranteed.

On Thursday, March 15, 2007 Diplomats at the UN have reached agreement in principle on a package of new sanctions against Iran, following its refusal to stop enriching uranium.
