When Entertainment Becomes a Way of Life

By Anthea Davis **

Jan. 23, 2006

Have you ever seen babies when they start to play? They first discover their hands and their feet and they can play for a long time just amusing themselves like that. Then babies start to grow and get more and more curious and they learn to use their hands and feet to do more interesting things. That was you when you were young! You were once a free spirit exploring everything around you. What happened?

Do you find that this essential curiosity that lies within all of us has diminished as we have grown? Does growing up have to mean growing more dependent on technology to help us feel entertained? Does getting older mean we have to become more and more boring?

The idea is that life isn't boring, people are boring! Life is so full of things to learn, to discover, people to meet, cultures to understand, countries to learn about; the world is full of phenomena: the miracles of nature, the universe, and animals.

And most of the small percentage of people in the world who have access to technology and the wealth to use it end up watching movies or playing video games. How many young people do you know who use the Internet and technology to actually learn more and develop themselves more and then give back some of that to the world?

Being entertained and expecting to be entertained has actually become a way of life. Huge cities continue to grow, and their populations often feel at a loss of what to do. A lack of space to play, a lack of nature for inspiration, too much emphasis on material possessions, and a culture of being entertained. Put all this together and you have got people who get wrapped up in their own lives, push down feelings of frustration with alcohol, drugs, or entertainment, or hurting others for fun!

Can you live for just one week without the TV or the computer? How often do you and your family just sit and talk together? Does that sound boring? If so, maybe you are becoming a victim of the modern age.

The thing is that every person in this world, including your parents and other family members, has a meaningful existence. Your opinions, words, and actions are extremely important even though some people might just discard them as boring and meaningless. In fact, they are so important that angels follow you around writing down every word, every action, and every opinion — every single one! So how can it be boring to talk to people?

The more we interact with people, the greater chance we have to learn and develop ourselves by benefiting from the lives of others and their experiences as well as by sharing the treasures of our own lives. So if you find yourself in a room full of people — precious, awesome individuals! — and they're all staring at the

TV set, you should feel bored! You should wish that you could all talk, discuss, communicate, and celebrate life. Go on! Switch off the TV! Turn off the computer and talk!

The joy and satisfaction that comes from realizing new truths, discovering new ways, and forging a way forward grows out of interaction with each other. We hear snippets of such things on TV, but the real life — the one that matters, the one that touches you and me — is the room with all the people you are sitting with right now. Start now! Don't look for entertainment. Look for someone to talk to.
