Summertime
is always the best time to start new habits and stop undesirable ones. It is
also a good time for renewal and change. We can use this time, when we are no
longer at our desks studying and can take a vacation from work, to involve
ourselves in different and interesting activities. It can be sports, art,
reading or even community work. This is a good opportunity to invest our time
and relax as well as distract ourselves from bad habits.
An
important change would be to break the habit of smoking. This should be easy if
we change the image we have of smoking in our minds. The idea of it being
‘hip’ and ‘cool’ has become an outdated perspective. Using you summer to
build your image and improve on your skills and talents could make a big
difference.
Smoking
causes a multitude of health problems, the least of which are unattractive, such
as bad breath.
According
to the American Lung Association, nearly 6,000 children under 18 years of age
start smoking daily and approximately 2,000 of them will become regular smokers.
That is almost 800,000 annually. An estimated 6.4 million children will die
prematurely from a smoking-related disease, if current tobacco use patterns
persist.
To
make a positive contribution to our lives this summer, help make the community
one smoker less.
