The
word “international” in association with Palestinian activism brings
to mind the high-profile killings of peace activists Tom Hurndall and
Rachel Corrie in Gaza. Over the years, hundreds of foreigners or
Palestinians with foreign passports have come to the West Bank and Gaza
for short stays in the hope that their presence will draw attention to
the plight of Palestinians on the ground, or even prevent housing
demolition or the killing and injuring of Palestinians by acting as
human shields.
However,
the majority of international activists for Palestinian justice campaign
from their own countries, taking to the streets for demonstrations,
holding market stalls, circulating petitions, and encouraging boycotts
of Israeli produce. As the following article
by Palestinian
Canadian activist Hazem Jamjoum shows that solidarity with the
Palestinian struggle comes from many different ideological
perspectives—religious, secular, pacifist—and thus can adopt many
different issues. Opposition to the series of apartheid walls dividing
the West Bank is fairly unanimous, but on other issues such as the right
of return, activists can differ over strategy and goals.
