A clear and thorough understanding of the Muslim world can only be achieved by
going further from the study of Islam to the dynamic and diverse experience of its people throughout the
ages. Today, Muslim communities in different parts of the world who take Islam as a primary component of
their identities, and who choose to define their roles in their societies within this light, are often faced
with special problems and challenges that bring them together with other Muslims in other societies, further
enhancing their sense of brotherhood.
This page is part of the Muslim Affairs section's ongoing attempt to present,
analyze, and discuss Muslim efforts in building positive and assertive lives and the varying solutions for
the challenges they encounter, especially when living in societies in which Islam is not considered a
cultural component.
Dating back to more than 400 years, Muslims in South Africa are considered among
the oldest, most assertive and outspoken Muslim communities in the world. Having endured and contributed to
the shaping of South Africa's turbulent history, they are part of the fabric of the society.
In this page, we hope to be able to present the experience of one of the world's
most distinguished communities; their history, struggle, achievements, and the continuous challenges they
face until the present day.
