Broken Images

What remains of a little girl with dimpled cheeks—

yesterday’s darling of the village school—

only a small pink hand laced with crimson

astonishingly salvaged from the pieces of flesh

strewn around at a dazzling celebration of death

in the echoing streets of Fallujah—

a gift to the Poor from the Rich and Free.

The Vicar of Christ in a wheel chair,

clad in sacramental white

holds out his trembling hand

to greet the Commander of history’s biggest arsenal;

his wrinkled face smiles his approval,

he crosses himself and gives his blessing—

The world looks on, silent and stony

with a heart numbed by sanctimonious piety.
