IslamOnline
has received an urgent message from World Family Alliance, a
coalition of pro-family non-government organizations (NGOs). You can
help protect family, marriage, and the unborn by e-mailing key UN
ambassadors to encourage them to support an important provision
currently under negotiation at the United Nations. Your action is
needed immediately.
Representatives
from UN member nations are meeting
in New York February 28–March 11, 2005 to review
the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action and Beijing
+5. These documents, while they contain some good provisions, also
contain items that go against Islamic Shari`ah.
UN
Ambassadors need to hear from people everywhere that the world does
not want the United Nations to become embroiled in unproductive
controversial negotiations over homosexual and abortion rights at
the current session of the Commission on the Status of Women. (See
below for additional background.)
Through
the World
Family Alliance Web site, you can easily send a
pre-written e-mail to 129 key UN ambassadors with only a single
mouse click. These ambassadors have either supported pro-family
provisions in the past or have not yet declared a position on these
issues. Just click
here to make a critical difference in this battle.
What
happens at the United Nations can have a direct and negative impact
on efforts to protect marriage, the family, and children in our own
countries! This is
because the documents and agreements reached at these conferences
become part of international
law, norms, and standards that shape and influence
national laws and policies worldwide.
The
anti-family, anti-children forces understand this, which is why they
are constantly working to slip things into these international
documents and agreements that will help achieve their goals at the
national level. They count on the fact that most people who are
dedicated to defending marriage, the family, and children in their
own countries do not understand the power of international consensus
documents.
But
ordinary people like you have helped to stop them before!
For
example, in just the past year, United Families International (the
coordinator of World Family Alliance) supporters flooded key UN
missions with e-mails that helped to successfully defeat the
“sexual orientation” human rights provision at the Human Rights
Commission. E-mails also helped to achieve recognition of the Doha
Declaration on the Family by the UN General Assembly.
Please
help do it again!
Please
take a couple of minutes to help defend marriage, family, and
children at the international level during this critical meeting.
We
must be constantly vigilant to these threats and be prepared to meet
them every time. The future of marriage, the family, and children in
all countries depends upon success in these critical battles.
You
can help even more by forwarding the url of this article to as many
other people as you can who will also take a few minutes to protect
marriage, the family, and children.
Brief
Background
Starting
on Monday, February 28 and ending March 12, the United Nations will
be negotiating a document at the Commission on the Status of Women
(CSW) that will build on two prior women’s rights documents, the Beijing
Platform for Action and Beijing
+5. The negotiations on these two landmark women’s
documents—one ten years ago and one five years ago—became fierce
battlegrounds over homosexual and abortion rights.
After
intense late-night battles the pro-family lobby defeated their worst
proposals five and ten years ago, but if we do not stop them now,
the past pro-family victories will have been for naught.
Last
week the anti-family forces working to influence the CSW tried to
force the conclusion of negotiations behind the scenes before the
official conference had even begun. They wanted to pass a
non-negotiable conference declaration that would rubber-stamp
everything in the Beijing documents.
But
the pro-family lobby caught them. And now it has to stop the current
attempts to force the anti-family, anti-child agenda on the world.
Fortunately,
at the past week’s preliminary negotiations, the US delegation
presented a strong proposal (also supported by the Vatican) that
would prevent the United Nations from using these past women’s
documents and the current one under negotiation to create new
international rights harmful to families.
On
February 28, the real battle begins with abortion rights at the
forefront, and it is predicted that the same battle over homosexual
rights will emerge if the US lead proposal is not adopted.
The
pro-family lobby will not give up its efforts to stop these attacks
on children and the family.
But
it needs your help.
A
number of UN member countries have not yet shown support for the
proposed provision that will protect children and families. Many of
these countries—and many of them Muslim— are the same ones that
fought these sexual orientation and abortion provisions five and ten
years ago. They now need a wake-up call.
Concerned
individuals around the world can help give them that wake up call!
Please
take a minute of your time to help defend marriage, family, and
children at the international level.
