Time to Rebuild - Donate to Help Aceh Children

By Mubha Kahar Muang

February 28, 2005

"By no means shall you attain righteousness unless you spend of that which you love;

And whatever of good you spend, Allah knows it well."

(Al-'Imran, 3:92)

On my last trip to Aceh, I discovered a small Islamic boarding school that impressed me greatly because of the sincerity, good management, and planning of the man running it. The boarding school began in Banda Aceh in 2003, and is called Lembaga Islam Markaz Al Ishlah al Azizah (MIA for short). Currently there are 35 young boys (mostly around 12 years old) living there, but there is space for 100 children. The boys who live at MIA are all victims of the political strife in Aceh and/or the recent tsunami disaster.

The man who runs MIA is named Tgk. H. Tu Bulqaini Tanjongan who is dedicated to the troubled children that he looks after. It is easy to see that he really cares about providing a safe and happy home for all those little ones who are not able to fend for themselves. I visited the children living at MIA on two occasions and I could see how fragile and sensitive some of them were. At first glance the boys do not look any different from other children but once you start talking to them you can see the turbulence inside. The only thing I could think about over and over again is what kind of adults these little children will grow up into if they do not have the proper guidance and someone to love and care for them. Messed-up adults always start off as messed-up kids! We must be aware of this and intercede whenever and however possible.

As Mr. Bulqaini put it, “Aceh has no greater wealth that must protected, than the wealth that is invested in each and every child who has become an unwilling victim of the recent calamities, both natural and man-made. The children of Aceh are the future.”

The children need:

  • School equipment

  • Sports equipment

  • Copies of the Qu'ran and religious books

  • Items for personal hygiene

  • Beds and bed linen

  • Food, water, and fuel

  • A means of transportation

"And they ask you O Muhammad what they should spend. Say:

Whatever you spend of good must be for parents and kindred and orphans and the poor who beg

And the wayfarers, and whatever you do of good deeds, truly, Allah knows it well." (Al-Baqarah, 2:215)
