About This Page

With avian flu death tolls on the rise and the discovery of bird flu in mammals, scientists are bracing themselves for the worst. The H5N1 virus spreads among birds through contact between an uninfected bird and an infected bird's saliva, nasal secretions, or feces. It could also be contracted by humans through contact with infected poultry. However, if this avian flu virus mutates to a form easily transmittable between humans, it may ignite a worldwide pandemic.

While over 170 people have been infected with the H5N1 virus, transference to humans is said to be rare and limited to cases of close contact with infected poultry. Thus applying basic measures of hygiene, cooking, and staying clear of sick poultry and wild birds can go a long way in saving lives.

The Health and Science department at IslamOnline.net has compiled a folder to provide easy-to-access and reliable information and updates on avian influenza. Quick facts are provided in our information bar at the right, and also in our section on Latest Bird Flu News, which provides updates from the Word Health Organization (WHO). Visuals also provide a quick and easy way to become acquainted with the disease.

In-depth news and knowledge about the disease can be found in the various folders provided in this page. These provide information and stories on animal and human cases of bird flu infection, and also on the precautions that countries and world organizations are taking in response to the pandemic. Relevant fatwas regarding bird flu are also provided. For a lighter look at bird flu, browse our links to bird flu humor sites.
