Traditions of Marriage

A Very Religious Ceremony in Pakistan

In Pakistan, the family of both the bride and the groom arrange everything. This very special occasion lasts from seven to ten days.

There is no free mixing between men and women in marriage ceremonies in Pakistan.

Celebrations are usually initiated by what is called “Al-Milad”, which is a religious occasion where the female relatives of both sides gather together and remember Allah, and utter supplications.

They also have what is called “Mayoon”. This special ceremony is usually marked by hanging all kinds of colorful adornments on the houses, gardens and trees surrounding the house of the bride.

Usually, the bride as well as her relatives and friends wear gold, and the bride’s close friends dance and sing to please their friend.

On the day of consummation, it is a custom among brides to wear oil hair and put creams in order to soften her skin.

The marriage contract is usually held at the groom’s house. It stands to reason that the Pakistani groom has a right to mention her conditions in the marriage contract. For example, she can determine whether children will remain with her not in case divorce takes place. The wife has the right to record those conditions if she likes as that is considered one of her basic matrimonial rights.

The bridal gift differs from one place to the other. For example, the bride is supposed to offer the groom a great amount of money if she is from a city. However, the matter is different if she is from the country.

Usually, the relatives of the bride buy a very expensive and heavy hand-made bridal gown for their beloved groom. They usually grant the bride golden bracelets in odd number, for example those bracelets might be 7 or 11 or 21.
