The Passion of The Christ: Read & Comment

28/03/2004

Throughout this past month we have covered the controversial debates on Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. Not only because of the accusation of it being an anti-Semitic film, but also for more important issues such as the excess of violence, the  independence of it (produced by the small, relatively new company, Newmarket Films) and its spirituality. Maybe the reason why so many religious and non-religious people are flocking to see this film is the desire for people to connect with something greater than worldly comfort. Moreover, at IslamOnline.net we were keen to introduce the Islamic viewpoint of Jesus’ story.

Here, we want you, our readers, to comment and tell us what you think about the film.

Islamonline.net hosted a live dialogue about Mel Gibson’s controversial new film, The Passion of the Christ: attempting to discuss the real reasons behind the film and what the buzz all about!

Two things seemed apparent: the excess violence did not seem to be too much of a bother, and the question of anti-Semitism was not even a concern. However, this was simply after observing people coming out of one showing of the film in one theater in one part of Manhattan . It cannot be extrapolated across the moral fiber of the country.

You cannot summarily say that Mel Gibson’s new film, The Passion of The Christ, is great, nor horrendous; it is just not that simple. However, you can say it is too much. It adheres so closely to the Biblical Gospels that it is hard to take—but maybe it has to be that way.

Just what is the buzz all about? Other directors have attempted to tell the story of Jesus before on television and in the movies, but Gibson takes on the last hours of Jesus’ life. Based on the Biblical gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, it is an unrestrained approach to the story.
