This Week’s Movie Ratings

By Ali Asadullah

29/06/2001

Please consult the following ratings system for the evaluation of films currently in theaters. Please note that films with themes specifically adult in nature will be rated as (Adult) in addition to being given an overall rating.

(CU) Completely Unacceptable
- Film contains levels of Sex, Violence, Profane Language and/or other objectionable content that are gratuitous to the degree that the film has absolutely no redeeming value either as a social commentary or as an entertaining diversion.
Examples: Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, Eyes Wide Shut, Eddie Murphy: Raw

(RU) Rather Unacceptable
- Film contains levels of Sex, Violence, Profane Language and/or other objectionable content that are extreme. As such only through extreme rationalization could someone consider the film fit for consumption. The only reason to see it would be as a study of the current state of Western culture.
Examples: American Beauty

(SA) Somewhat Acceptable
- Aspects of objectionable Sex, Violence and Profane Language and/or other questionable content exist, but either a) Not in a gratuitous manner, b) Not in great frequency or c) With specific redeeming intent. But be very careful.
Examples: Malcolm X, American History X, The Matrix

(RA) Rather Acceptable
- Overall, the film is suitable for general consumption with some concerns over thematic issues or minor objectionable content. But be on the lookout for more subtle Western themes that are of concern to Muslims such as romance and dating.
Examples: Shrek, Atlantis

(CA) Completely Acceptable
- Film content is either tame or fully socially redeeming in nature.
Examples: Jinnah, The Battle of Algiers, Bambi

A.I. (SA-Adult)
Summary: As a research test case, the first artificial life form with the capacity to love is created. Unfortunately the young boy's adjustment to life amongst humans does not go as smoothly as planned, leaving him to search for meaning, both in the world of humans and that of his own kind. Not finding acceptance in either, he explores the finer elements that define humanity and finds the line of demarcation between what is artificial and what is organic quite difficult to navigate. Given a MPAA rating of PG-13, A.I. does have some sexual content and scenes of violence. Overall though, it is a cautionary tale with greater purpose than simple entertainment.

Lumumba (CA-Adult)
Summary: Lumumba chronicles the life and times of the first president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Patrice Lumumba. Both a charismatic and controversial figure, Lumumba was arguably the central figure in the DRC push for freedom from colonial rule under Belgium. He stood for unity beyond tribal lines and was a strong proponent of Pan-Africanism. His stances drew fierce opposition from forces both inside the DRC and from foreign nations. Forced from office shortly after his inauguration, Lumumba was subsequently arrested by his rivals and executed. This movie is not rated. However because of the subject matter, one can expect a great deal of violence in this film. Nonetheless it is an important work that sheds valuable light on the history of region of the world so often left as an unfortunate footnote in the annals of war crime atrocities.

Baby Boy (RU-Adult)
Summary: From the mind of director John Singleton comes yet another tale of reality from the mean streets of South Central Los Angeles. Singleton's first movie on this subject, Boyz in the Hood, caused a stir in 1991 with its graphic portrayal of poverty and gang life in Black communities on the West Coast. It even foreshadowed, to an extent, the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Baby Boy continues the story, focusing on the struggle of Jody (Tyrese Gibson) to become a man, after fathering two children out of wedlock while lacking a solid education and employment prospects. The film has powerful social commentary, but includes unacceptable levels of sexuality, drug & alcohol use, and other adult themes.

Crazy/Beautiful (RU-Adult)
Summary: A typical tale of teen rebellion, this movie follows the relationship of a rebellious rich white girl and a poorer boy of minority background. Her self-destructive behavior threatens his opportunity to make the most of his education and aspirations. Themes and content, including strong sexuality and language, make this movie unacceptable for consumption.

Pootie Tang (SA-Adult)
Summary: A character taken from comedian Chris Rock's HBO television series, Pootie Tang is half-superhero and half-enigma. This movie follows his hilarious adventures as he takes on an evil corporation that tries to get children to eat fast food and smoke. In the process, Pootie becomes a role model for kids everywhere. This film has an overall positive message and provides the rare opportunity to see a Black character as a superhero. There is a good deal of crass humor, some of which is rooted in sexual content, as well as a good deal of foul language.
