I thought I’d share this with you, for I was appalled by the ethnocentricity of his speech. It is sad to see how a politician could be so misinformed. Combating Terrorism: The Crisis of Afghanistan from a European Perspective A lecture by James Moorhouse I have been invited to talk about Afghanistan and that is what I am going to do as far as I am able. It is a very complex matter. I have to say at the start that I am a full supporter of the British government’s policy but I am in no sense here to speak for the British government. They don’t know I am here - I don’t tell them everything you understand… The European countries reacted very, very swiftly through NATO and through the European Union itself and determined that this was certainly a danger to the peoples of Europe and the United States but also that terrorism must be cut down. It was a remarkable expression of unified thought by the many countries involved. We are talking about at least 20 countries… As we saw right from the beginning this was an issue between the West and terrorism… It still is today a matter of trying to find bin Laden and his people and destroying them. Mr. Blair has been heroic in his effort. It is certainly a very remarkable effort… If bin Laden is found, dead or alive, that is not the end of the story. We will have to continue to be very vigilant. Why did that American plane crash a few days ago? It is generally being talked about as an accident but we don’t really know. I was an aeronautical engineer and I can tell you that engines do not come off by themselves. The tail fin does not just fall off, and the chances of all three happening at the same time and at that particular site and close to New York there are some questions to be answered. We hope there are persuasive answers. The jury is out on that one… I think in a lot of respects President Bush who does not on the whole have many admirers in this country has done an outstanding job.
