Since the arrival of Muslim migrants in the West up to the
present it has been the rule for mosques to bring their
imams from the country of origin of the mosque builders. In
many cases these imams do not speak the language of the
host country and are not familiar with the structure of its
society or the problems and dilemmas their followers face.

By their lack of understanding of the society they work in
they end up either driving people away from the mosque or
bringing further tension to intercultural relations because
of their conservative and traditional sermons.

It is high time for European governments to fund the
establishment of an officially recognised imam course to
furnish the mosques within its borders. Imams who graduate
from this course should also give their sermons in the
local language to make what happens in mosques more
transparent and accessible for both goverment scrutity and
non-Arabic, Urdu or Turkish speakers.
