The motion to stop headscarves in French schools is no
doubt going to work as French President Jacques Chirac has
voiced support for last week's report by a government
commission, which proposed a ban on conspicuous religious
signs in schools. Affected also are Jewish skull-caps and
large Christian crosses.
However, to Muslims Hijab has much importance to Muslim
women than mere signs. Is this not a crime against
religious freedom? What impact would this have on other
