Every year on the 14th February many people especially the
youth hasten to celebrate the day of love, sympathy and
romantic feelings as they believe are a part of Valentine's
Day. But why is this day attributed to the Saint Valentine.
Anyway, it is not the focus here, but we can now try to
change this to Muhammad's Day.
This is Why…
For about fourteen centuries, there was a unique example,
the most precious of his time and for all time since then.
A man gathered within himself humbleness, kindness,
romance, mercy and love to others, even his enemies. This
man was Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him). When
Prophet Muhammad's teeth were broken and his head was
hurting, when he escaped with the blood covered most of his
face during the Battle of Uhud, instead of invoking a curse
upon his enemies, he invoked guidance for them and begged
his Beloved to purify their sins.
It has been narrated on the authority of Anas that the
Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) had his front
teeth damaged on the day of the Battle of Uhud, and got a
wound on his head. He was wiping the blood (from his face)
and was saying: How will these people attain salvation who
have wounded their Prophet and broken his tooth while he
called them towards God? At this time, God, the Exalted and
Glorious, revealed the Verse:" Thou hast no authority"
(iii. 127). Muslim 19: 4417)
It has been narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah who
said: It appeared to me as if I saw the Messenger of Allah
(may peace be upon him) (and heard him) relate the story of
a Prophet who had been beaten by his people, was wiping the
blood from his face and was saying. My Lord, forgive my
people, for they do not know. (Muslim 19: 4418)
Was he not the one who openly revealed his love to his wife
A`isha, when `Amr ibn Ass asked him: who is the dearest one
to your heart? Prophet Muhammad answered A`isha. And now
can you imagine the kind of love that came from a pure
heart? Muhammad the man who stilled remembered his first
wife Khadijah, even after her death, hosted her friends and
kept memories of her alive.
Anas b. Malik reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon
him) as saying: The excellence of 'A'isha over women is
like the excellence of Tharid over all other foods. (Muslim
31: 5992).
'A'isha reported: Never did I feel jealous of any woman as
I was jealous of Khadija. She had died three years before
he (the Holy Prophet) married me. I often heard him praise
her, and his lord, the Exalted and Glorious, had commanded
him to give her the glad tidings of a palace of jewels in
Paradise: and whenever he slaughtered a sheep he presented
(its meat) to her female companions. (Muslim 31: 5970)
Such a love extended to encompass all creatures even the
animals and the whole universe. Was it not he who
said: "Uhud is a mountain that loves us and we love it"?
Was it not Prophet Muhammad who showed the ultimate love to
his homeland Mecca and when he was forced to leave it his
eyes were bathed in tears addressing his beloved city as
the dearest country to his heart and were it not for being
forced to leave it, he would never leave it.
Then we have Prophet Muhammad's love for his Creator. It
was the Prophet whose feet got swollen due to his standing
in lengthy prayers invoking and pleading with Him. Prophet
Muhammad was a man who felt through his pure heart the
magnitude of the religion he was asked to proclaim, and
sensed the hidden meaning of the Holy Qur`an through his
senses. That is why his teaching remain eternal passed on
from one generation to the next. He was a man who closed
his heart on Allah's orders and loved everything in this
world for Allah's sake.
The Key
Really, Prophet Muhammad gave us the magic key to the
sincere love which springs from the most magnificent
virtues of mercy and compassion. It is Prophet Muhammed who
held between his fingers the drops of rain, embracing them
and said "They are coming from my beloved, Allah". Prophet
Muhammad, the man who is still living amongst us in our
hearts through his teachings and instructions; whose core
and gist are structured on love and mercy. The love that
has levels, until we reach its highest level, and most
sublime stage – the love of our Creator.
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon
him) as sayings: A person suffered from intense thirst
while on a journey, when he found a well. He climbed down
into it and drank (water) and then came out and saw a dog
lolling its tongue on account of thirst and eating the
moistened earth. The person said: This dog has suffered
from thirst as I had suffered from it. He climbed down into
the well, filled his shoe with water, then caught it in his
mouth until he climbed up and made the dog drink it. So
Allah appreciated this act of his and pardoned him. Then
(the Companions around him) said: Allah's Messenger, is
there for us a reward even for (serving) such animals? He
said: Yes, there is a reward for service to every living
animal. (Muslim 26:5577)
Muhammad's Day
Verily, Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)
deserves to be the leader of lovers, since he is the man
who briefs us on the true meaning of love and puts it
within our reach through mercy.
So, let all our days be Muhammad's, following together his
steps and learning/teaching each other his love.
{"Say (O Muhammad): ‘if you (truly) love Allah, follow me!
Allah will then love you and forgive your sins.’ And Allah
is All Forgiving, All Merciful."} (Al Imran 3:31)
